A seed is the unit of reproduction of a flowering plant, capable of developing into another such plant.
Seeds are living things that need to be nurtured and cared for to survive. The term ‘seed’ generally means anything that can be sown, e.g. herb seeds, tomato seeds, lettuce seeds. Open-pollinated seeds can be saved for future planting. In nature, open-pollinated seeds are fertilised naturally by insects such as bees and butterflies, birds, and the wind.
Open-pollinated varieties are those, which if isolated from other varieties of the same species, will produce seed that is genetically ‘true to type’. This means that the seed will grow into a plant very similar to the parent. These seeds produce food that is nutritious and full of flavour and particularly suited to home gardens. Older strains of open-pollinated plants are referred to as ‘heirlooms’. Heirlooms are open-pollinated varieties that have developed outside of the commercial plant trade and have a historical or cultural significance.
If you are not ready to collect and sow seeds from your herb garden but would like to keep your herb plants producing the best tasting leaves for longer, simply snip off any buds or flowers as soon as they appear. Once a flower develops, all of the plant’s energy goes into producing flowers and then seeds. Remaining leaves may taste bitter and the plant won’t produce new leaves.
