Baby Cos Lettuce
Lettuce is one of the most rewarding crops for the home garden, the difference between home grown and store bought is amazing, and Little Gem, the baby Cos variety in our Kits does very well in containers and small space gardens. Baby Cos lettuce it a compact plant with sweet, crisp, narrow leaves. The vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and fibre found in Romaine lettuce varieties will maximize the health benefits of your salads.
For example, just 8 leaves will provide more than 100% of you recommended daily intake of Vitamin A which increases skin cell turnover, and the potassium in Cos gives skin a refreshing boost of nutrients and oxygen by improving circulation.
Once outer leaves are about 8 cm long, you can begin harvesting Cos lettuce, they do not need to grow to maturity. Simply snap off individual outer leaves by hand, extending the growing period and ensuring fresh, crisp lettuce for every salad. This is the best method if you have limited space and only grow a few plants. To harvest whole plants, cut the lettuce about 2 cms above the crown of the plant. Cutting into or below the crown will kill the plant, so take care with this. Early morning is the best time for harvesting lettuce. The leaves will have plumped up overnight, and are at their peak freshness.
For most home gardeners, successive planting is the key to growing lettuce. Baby Cos are ideal for container and balcony gardens, start some seeds in your Mini Greenhouse every few weeks, they are quick to sprout. Also, you don’t have to fill an entire container with lettuce, simply plant a few seedlings around existing flower plants for instance. For those with more space, planting 3 or 4 lettuce seedlings where you have a gap in the garden every 2 to 3 weeks will give you a steady supply through the summer.
